Why convert Illustrator files to PDF
An .ai file only opens properly in Adobe Illustrator or compatible design software. When you need to send artwork to a client, printer, or colleague who does not have it, a PDF is the safe choice: anyone can open it, and it keeps vector artwork sharp at any zoom level.
How the conversion works
Modern Illustrator files are saved with a built-in PDF version of the artwork — this is the “Create PDF Compatible File” option, on by default. PDF Studio reads that built-in PDF and saves it as a clean, standard PDF, with the title set from the file name. The vector content is not re-rendered, so artwork stays sharp. You can add several files at once, and each becomes its own PDF; with several results, use Download All.
The conversion runs in your browser, so your design files are not uploaded.
When a file cannot be converted
Files saved without PDF compatibility, and very old Illustrator formats (before version CS2), do not contain the built-in PDF and cannot be converted; the tool shows an error naming the file. In that case, open the file in Illustrator and use Save As or Save a Copy with “Create PDF Compatible File” ticked, or use File → Export → PDF directly. Only files ending in .ai are accepted.
What to expect in the result
The PDF contains what Illustrator saved in the compatible version: artboard content, vector shapes, text, and placed images. Illustrator-specific editing information is left behind, so the PDF cannot be reopened as a fully editable Illustrator document. For client delivery, print review, or archiving, that is usually exactly what is wanted. To shrink large PDFs afterwards, use Compress PDF.
